WOW!, One Down, More to Come!

The long awaited ending to Usagi Drop is finally here! Chapter 56... well... I just don't think it was nearly as well written as most of the series, it makes me wonder about the circumstances surrounding ending the series so suddenly. Just for clarity's sake, I'll let you know that there is a two year time skip between chapter 55 and chapter 56, the chapter doesn't even make that terribly clear unless you're paying attention. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it, and look forward to eventual releases of the spin-off manga, either when public raws appear for the magazine releases or when the volume release comes out and we buy it.

Also, we've got that one-shot I mentioned a while back. It took a little longer than I expected, since the editor working on it wanted to make sure all the color redraws and stuff were up to snuff before we released it. We didn't bother including a credits page for this one since it's so short that it seemed silly, (page number wise - there was still plenty of work that went into this one, especially in the editing side) but I did the scanning and translation, and GayRobot did the editing.

  5. Thanks for finishing this series off in such timely fashion. Much appreciation. It's been a great read.

I have a question though, what's the deal with the extra volume mentioned in the afterward? Is it a continuation of the story, or something else?

  6. It's the 'spin-off' that has been mentioned in the comments a few times and in tonight's blog post. It's supposed to be somewhere in the middle of the main story's timeline.

  7. Ah, it's the spinoff. Okay. for some reason i was just assuming that was something different entirely. Thanks for the answer.

  8. What a cute ending! Thanks for all your hard work on this read. Really sad that it's over... T.T

  9. Thanks for all the hard work. It was fun for most of it.

It really sucks that mangaka do adoptive parents wrong (or rather their fans wrong in my opinion) by always taking the relationship something further than parent-child. It usually comes out of left field and makes the whole thing super disappointing at the end.

  10. Thank you for finishing Usagi Drop!

It was a really good manga, the ending was a little weak though (compared to the whole manga). Anyway, thanks for your hard work!

  11. Not having read the final chapter yet (I'm trying to avert my eyes), I just wanted to say THANK YOU for finishing this manga up, and for all the great work you did on it.

One quick question: I've heard mention of a spinoff and saw a comment here that it takes place in the middle of the story (whatever that means) -- does that mean between being 6yrs old and in high school? Like Jr High maybe? Is it just a one-volume spinoff, or an ongoing series? Same characters, or does it focus on side charcaters? Whether or not you decide to take it up (I hope you do!) :) I was just curious what it's about. Please post here just a few more details on what it is if you can. Thanks! (Oh, and the title as well).

Anyway, thanks again for finishing off UD!!!
Time to go read it now.. :)

  15. 2 years gap for the ending chapter?! O_o you mean its 2 years time skip when usagi Drop still in the magazine right?

they must be thinking a lot how to end the series... but 2 years is just a bit...

anyway, thanks for the chapter. neat and fast as always

  16. The "spin-off" is a side story. I think it will most likely cover the middle school years of Rin, there was that huge plot hole of the middle years, and major issues that where never resolved. Like the part where Kouki hurt Rin Emotionally or maybe phsically really bad, that cause Daikachi to beat Kouki to a inch of his life, for Dai to get that mad, it really had to be something bad. Rape, comes to mind but I really hope not.

  17. Nice job to everyone involved, took a long time and far too many groups to get here. Yeah I'd say it definitely wasn't the most cohesive end, but what can you do? Hope everyone enjoys the series and looks forward to the spinoff whenever that gets belted out.

  18. Thank you for scanlating the manga in such a timely manner! Eagerly awaiting the spin-off now!

I think the ending was okay. But overall I would have preferred the two of them staying as parent and child.

  19. Thank you so much for finishing Usagi Drop. I really wish the story didn't go down the road that it did, but that has nothing to do with you all.

    Once again, thanks a lot.

  20. Thanks for closing out this series.

    You guys are amazing <3

  21. just my opinion, dont take it if you dont think so.
the ribbon one, i think you can use effect to wrap the words in pink with a lil darker colour. the pink will still be there but readable better. cause its a bit hard to read.

i can see a gender bender series coming XD i wonder why lately trap fad keep growing in manga

  28. Thanx a lot you are our heroes , but usagi drop vol 9.5 could you please translate this one too

    ReplyDelete
  29. 9.5 is a companion book to the anime. It isn't a volume of manga.

    ReplyDelete
  30. thank you for your work....loved this series

    ReplyDelete
  31. will you guys do Usagi Drop extra volume?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks for translating the last chapter of Usagi Drop! The ending wasn't as satisfying as I'd hoped, but it wasn't terrible. I hope the extra volume provides a bit more closure.

Thanks again for your hard work! Muchly appreciated! \o/

  34. thanks for the translating , hope you dont mind to translate also for the extra volume of usagi drop later on . hehehe . thanks .

  35. Cheers, thanks for the last chapter.

On a related note, was there any real clarification as to why Kouki's mum rejected Daichi and then simply married another guy later. Apart from of course a plot device to get her out of the picture as we never see her after that. A bit weird as she was almost a main character for a while there. She would be the much more logical choice rather than Rin.

  36. Thanks for finishing Usagi Drop

  37. @skittles

    just my guess,
probably she thought that it would be a bit hard for Kouki and Rin in case they want to marry?(they will become bro and sis by law)
or feel too old for Daikichi? hell, Daikichi said its fine.
or maybe she simply not interested with Daikichi?

cant think of another reason, Daikichi is pretty good and have said that he is fine with Kouki's mom being more than 40s. even if its just manga, im a bit curious of the reason why. maybe we should ask the mangaka him/her self

  39. Overall, THANX FOR THE SCANS!

Been reading this manga since its very first scanalation. Trust me, it was many MANY years ago. Everytime i read this, i get a sigh of relief, because its a feel good comic/manga.

But with that, the 'twists' and 'turns' that transpired at the end.. Really didnt do this manga justice.

    ** spoilers **

It would have better for Rin to go off to college and explore life, as a good bye piece, hence the 'feel good ending.' But 'Dai' raised her and never saw her as more than a daughter.

Man this really left a bad taste in my mouth, i feel like my manhood wants to crawl inside of me and never come out again, thats how this ending was to me. At least show alittle of what happens after HS or during HS in the japanese culture. Or have Rin study abroad because of her knitting skills (fashion designer? Since her mom was a manga-ka).

Soo many ways to push this story, the boyfriend/girlfiend angle is... Too dry, too young. Far better stretch to show Rin as a mature woman and looking beyond that and exploring life, while this was happening in her 2nd year in HS! That is the way i would have ended it. With Dai able to return to work with OT and get a promotion, also showcasing his great skills AND the japanese working spirit!

Now imagine at chap 50-53, when Rin’s feelings starts to develop for Dai, and she was confronted after Kioki (im bad at spelling) confessed to Dai about the feelings. Dai should have taken lead and said something along the lines of: ‘I raised you, I wanted you to be your own woman (add alittle get out of this Freudian mindset she’s having). I given you the opportunities that I could not afford. If you have these feelings, pass it on to the next generation, the ones where you are parent, which I can be smiling, happy and ultimately find solace as your father. Explore life, do what you want! Not for my sake, but for yours!’ -----From there, Rin should get a new path of thinking, of life and would go about finding what she has passion for, and that’s a fashion designer, for… BUNNIES! See, get it? Bunny drop clothing lines! Now dai can go drinking and party like a rock star without worrying about Rin!!!

And DON’T get me started with a 40 something year old with a woman less than half his age… That is.. Yea wrong!

Anyways, sorry to rant, overall, thank you! THANK YOU! THANK YOU FOR YOUR HARD WORK! FAV THIS SITE!! *note these are my opinions, agree to disagree*

  40. Thank you for your hard work! You've made this series very enjoyable! I have to say however that I agree with Hostile and EscFate that this ending was more than a bit of a disappointment and did leave me with that "bitter taste" in my mouth. I don't think I'll ever understand why this would considered a sweet ending, must be a cultural thing. C'est la vie.

  41. I thought the story was great. dont get me wrong there were a few things that didint make sense and the ending was totally unexpected, but all in all it was a terrific story that made you feel good. Thanks guys for finishing it.

  49. Late or not - Thank you very much Wow scanlations for finishing Usagi Drop.. you guys do a lot of *hard work* to get this stuff to us (read 'me') which we couldn't get to read otherwise (where I'm from unfortunately)! Thank you for giving us the chance to sample some truly rich stuff!

PS: I too thought the end was 'rushed'/'forced' and I too am left wondering if the real potential for this story has been sacrificed for ?-service ("fan"service? really? .. ) But the style of the art, narration, story pace, story telling, and the 'feel' of this manga made it worth the while for me atleast!! Well, to what it *was* - Usagi Drop will be remembered fondly (less for the ending)
